This show is such a mind-bender, like free-basing on some sweet drugs only once in a while: you feel wacky watching it, and it is quirky fun, and then you get hit over the head with a tone-shift that goes super sentimental that tugs at your heartstrings!
This is an awesome pic from my new favorite episode! Marceline's frown and the way she looks at him as she hugs him shows her sweet sorrow over the fact that this poor guy does not even remember how he used to be, and how far he has fallen.
The color is nice and dreary, matching Marceline's mood of tragic joy. I like how we cannot even see the Ice King's face now; it represents how lost he is, the fact we cannot read his face, lost and unknown, just like his memories. Brilliant stuff!
Ugh, I know what you mean! I fully believe this isn't a children's show. Like the cartoons we used to watch as kids and we didn't catch all the little hints and innuendos until we rewatched it we were older.
